Overview:

This is tutorial for doing a watercolor sketch of a comic character portrait. The full length process video is approximately 30 minutes in length. This also comes with a phone background of the finished painting for your use!

I've included a drawing template we will use to transfer the sketch I've made to watercolor paper. This can be done in the method on the sketch template, or with carbon paper available at most art stores.  You are basically transfering a small amount of pencil through the back of your sketch to the watercolor paper to give guidelines for painting.  If you have done a sketch, you cover the back with the carbon paper or a bunch of smeared graphite/charcoal etc, and draw over your sketch outlines.  This pushes the material on to the watercolor paper below.  It is also a good idea to tape the paper down so it stays aligned while you're tracing over some of the lines again.

Files in this download:

~ Full length video of Watercolor Process (vertical format for ease of use with smartphones)

~ Reference sketch to transfer if desired

Materials List:

~ Windsor and Newton Watercolors or Holbein (Japan-made!)

~ Arches Cold Press watercolor paper (300gsm) cut to a 7x10 in paper size

Additional Info:

This is a approximately 1 and a half hour painting reduced to approximately 30 minutes. I have fast-forwarded through areas that are redundant to emphasize technique and performance as well as color mixing for viewability (and downloadability).

Be sure to get a thick watercolor paper that has some cotton in its construction. Brands available such as Arches Hot and Cold Press Watercolor papers are some of the best. They do run expensive so plan before you paint! Or break the bank and go for it.

I hope you enjoy this process, and please let me know on any of my socials if you have feedback or would like to see additional information.
